"Beacons" is a permanent light and sound installation at Asker train station in Norway. It is located just outside Oslo, and this newly refurbished railwaystation is the 5th largest in Norway.

This public artwork was selected as the best solution out of 5 other proposals, and it has since the
opening in May 2005, been very well received. Both from the press with good and informative
reviews, but also lots of positive reactions from the public.

"Beacons" is made of three different black metal screens, mounted on the three arcades between
the railway tracks. (see the map page and the info page). The pulsating lights are mounted on the
back of these screens, making them shine as towers or beacons. Millions of color combinations
are fading in and out, in a preprogrammed loop.

The music is a 4 hour loop of sound that is repeated endlessly. Everyday this loop changes, and
new constellations of sound is heard. There are 6 channels with 2 channels (speakers) on each of
the arcades, mounted hidden behind the black metal screens.
Similar to the lightprojections, the sound is composed in a way that is dedicated to the shape of
the room and location. The sound will travel and pan between the channels and arcades, making a sense of aliveness and an imaginary expanding of the room.

The intention of this installation has been to make a positive and decorative artwork for the
average public. This without sacrificing high artistic quality and credibility. Making an artwork
that can be both future proof, as well as a creative and inspirational source to the people who
travel.
