Background and thoughts (Page 2/2)
Erik is a well known Norwegian composer with education and experience in composition and working in
various musical projects throughout the past many years.
His love of Native American cultures has finally
culminated in his receipt of a grant from Norway to
complete a project in this respect. I am honored to
have been selected to work with him on this project.
Erik is a long time artist on the american record
label, Spotted Peccary Music.
It is our intent to create a release
encompassing several Native American tribes, such as the White
Mountain Western Apache, Navajo,
Hopi, Lakota Sioux, Pueblo, Anasazi, and Yaqui, to mention a few.
We plan to focus on creating layers
of textured sounds created in the ambient respect then continuing
layers of actual hand crafted
instruments from the various tribes. Taos drums, Navajo rattles, Sioux drums
Apache rattles are some of
the instruments. Acclaimed artist Steve Roach will be lending his expertise
and insight into the project
as well, contributing with lush soundscape materials.
The use of flute is relatively new in the North American Native cultures, so we will not focus so much on that. Instead we will try to go further back in the history, using more traditional and original instruments.
The actual liner notes for this album will soon be presented on this website with a brief
summary about
each of the Native American tribes that we actually have with instrumentation on this
project. There will
also be specific quotes from several Native Americans (of the respective
tribes) with a statement on their
view of the role history has shown for them. We also plan to have a
timeline of photographs included.
It is our intent to make this a very honoring message to the public as to the heritage and richness of these tribes and to show the importance of Native American culture for the future of this world.
